Principal Investigator
Dr. Deepak Kaushik
Dr. Kaushik leads research in neuroimmunology and neuroinflammation within the Immunology and Infectious Diseases program at the Faculty of Medicine. His research is dedicated to unraveling the immune mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular focus on cellular metabolism and immune cell behavior in brain health. Utilizing advanced techniques such as single-cell RNA sequencing, met-flow, and confocal microscopy, his lab seeks to uncover new therapeutic targets for multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neuroinflammatory conditions. The lab’s research is generously funded by MS Canada, the U.S. Department of Defense, CIHR, NSERC, the Brain Canada Foundation, Medical Research Foundation, and institutional start-up funds.

Post Doctoral Fellow
Dr. Tamar R. Abel
Dr. Tamar R. Abel is a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Kaushik’s lab, where she applies omics and computational approaches to study human disease. She earned her B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Vermont and her Ph.D. in Systems Biology from Dartmouth College, where her doctoral research focused on a rare autoimmune disease using patient-derived organoids and single-cell technologies. Prior to joining the Kaushik lab, Tamar completed a brief computational postdoctoral fellowship at The Jackson Laboratory, studying molecular signatures of Alzheimer’s disease in novel murine models and publicly available human datasets. She brings broad experience in molecular and cellular biology alongside expertise in generating and analyzing multi-omic data, including bulk RNA- and ATAC-seq, single-cell RNA/ATAC/multiome, and genomics. She is particularly motivated by translational research that bridges patient-derived biology with insight from disease models and high-throughput data. Outside the lab she enjoys hiking, gardening, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

Mohammadamin Sadeghdoust
Amin is a recent graduate from the Kaushik Lab and is currently working as a Science Technician in the lab. He is characterizing human multiple sclerosis lesions and analyzing high-throughput single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing data. Amin is an MD-MPH graduate from Mashhad Azad University, Iran, with over five years of clinical research experience. His research background also includes work on the de- and remyelination mouse model using LPC. Outside the lab, Amin enjoys exploring the outdoors, swimming, and spending time with his curious toddler daughter, embracing every challenge with laughter and energy.
